Effects of initial static shear stress on cyclic behaviour of sand stabilised with colloidal silica

Abstract Colloidal silica (CS) grouting is a soil improvement technique introduced as an innovative remedial measure against seismic liquefaction. It consists of injecting soils with time-hardening, nanosilica-based solution forming gel among particles. This paper presents the results experimental study on effects initial static shear stress behaviour cyclically loaded clean sand stabilised 5% CS. Undrained cyclic triaxial tests were performed to analyse response loose untreated and specimens, isotropically or anisotropically consolidated at same mean effective stress. The consolidation stage was used provide insight compressibility soil. Stress–strain behaviour, pore water pressure resistance investigated. showed that: (i) exhibits higher than one during isotropic consolidation; (ii) strength for one, increasing degree anisotropic increases; (iii) extra development does not depend anisotropy sand, while hold sand. Simplified relationships are proposed describe process residual build-up process.
